Building Up So You Don't Burnout

Oct 11, 2026  •  Pastor Arthur J. James

We are in the fourth quarter of the year, and if we are honest, many of us started January with bold goals and high hopes, only to find ourselves exhausted and running on empty as the final months close in. This message speaks directly to that reality, drawing from Mark chapter 1, verses 35 through 39, where we see Jesus himself stepping away from the crowds, the miracles, and the demands of ministry to spend time alone in prayer before daybreak. If the Son of God built margin into his life, what does that say about our own need to do the same? The central spiritual insight here is that burnout does not happen overnight. It builds quietly, stealing our joy, dulling our passion, and causing us to merely endure life rather than enjoy it. The message challenges us to recognize the warning signs in ourselves and in those around us, and to respond not with more striving, but with intentional rest, prayer, and connection to God. Five practical strategies emerge from this passage, each rooted in scripture and lived experience, offering us a roadmap for finishing the year strong without losing ourselves in the process. This is not a call to slow down out of fear, but to build up through faith so that when our moment comes, we are ready.
